“An unsmoked Texas single malt held four years under bond in heavily charred new oak.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- a sharp solvent lift opens onto raspberry candy, then rich malt, ripe dark cherry and a touch of vanilla
- palate
- light in body; strong cinnamon and mild dark chocolate lead, with leather, toffee and oak beneath, like chocolate-cinnamon fudge
- finish
- medium length; cinnamon and cocoa hold on, then fade to toasted macadamia and a little dry oak
Mash bill
- Malted barley100%
100% malted barley. The barley is unsmoked, unlike the distillery's mesquite- and peat-smoked malts, so the grain itself carries the flavor. Four years in heavily charred new oak push this all-barley spirit toward dark fruit, cinnamon and chocolate.
- Cask
- New 53-gallon charred oak, #4 char
Why it's craft
Andalusia is an independent Hill Country distillery founded in Blanco in 2016 by Ty Phelps and Tommy Erwin, and it mashes, ferments and pot-distills all of its whiskey on site. This bottling follows the bonded rules: one distillery, one distilling season and at least four years in a government-bonded warehouse. The distillery calls it the first bottled-in-bond whiskey in Texas history.
