“Golden Promise malt passed through four kinds of old sherry solera puncheon.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- brandied fig dusted with smoked paprika, sautéed apricot, orange zest, cherry pipe tobacco and browned butter, with raisin bread and toffee behind
- palate
- sticky medjool date and cashew butter, cacao nib and clove, oxidized, nutty wine and sultana, then eucalyptus and burnt lemon peel
- finish
- long; pineapple and cinnamon give way to bittersweet herbal liqueur, espresso and cherry, with wine and oak lingering
Mash bill
- Golden Promise malted barley100%
100% Golden Promise malted barley. Golden Promise is an old Scottish barley variety, and Balcones has not said where this malt was grown. Cataleja pairs it with long open fermentations before copper pot distillation.

Why it's craft
Cataleja was made for Balcones' fifteenth year of distilling, and its finishing casks are retired sherry solera puncheons in four styles, Moscatel, Amontillado Dulce, Oloroso and Palo Cortado. Balcones mashes and pot-distills its malt in Waco, where it began in 2008 in a former welding shop under a bridge. The distillery has been owned by Diageo since 2022.
