“The first bonded rye in the Mad Angler line, built on Hazlet rye grown on the distillery's own farm.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- lightly sugared breakfast cereal with vanilla and almond, then mellow caramel giving way to deep oak and a quiet edge of rye spice
- palate
- caramel, vanilla and soft baking spice like a cinnamon roll or glazed donut, with earthy threads of leather and toasted oak taking hold toward the back
- finish
- warm and lingering; rye spice comes forward with a lightly toasted edge, while leather and oak stay on and dry toward crisp toast as it fades
Mash bill
- Hazlet rye60%
- Organic yellow corn30%
- Barley10%
60% Hazlet rye, 30% organic yellow corn, 10% barley. The Hazlet rye is grown on the Iron Fish farm, the corn is organic grain from Michigan growers, and the barley comes from northern Michigan. This is a new recipe for the series: the earlier Mad Angler Rye was 95% rye, while the corn in this one adds sweetness under the rye spice.
- Cask
- New charred American oak
Why it's craft
Most of the grain in this rye is Hazlet rye from the Iron Fish farm, distilled and aged on the same property. It is the distillery's first bottled-in-bond rye, held to the federal bond rules and bottled without chill filtration. Iron Fish, founded in 2016 as Michigan's first farm distillery, also sells bought-in rye finished in other casks, but this one is entirely its own.
