“The whiskey that started the Rieger revival: three aged whiskeys married with a dash of 15-year-old oloroso sherry.”

Tasting notes

nose
Dried fruit up front, then caramel, butterscotch and buttered popcorn over honey, vanilla and a grainy corn sweetness
palate
Creamy and sweet, with corn, raisin and almond giving way to bitter chocolate, ripe peach and a growing prickle of clove
finish
Long, with clove and grassy rye spice outlasting the sweetness and the fruit, turning drier and more peppery as it fades

Mash bill

A blend of several whiskeys, so no single grain split.

A blend of straight bourbon, light corn whiskey and straight rye whiskey with a small amount of 15-year-old oloroso sherry; the grain recipes of the components and the blend proportions are not published. The three whiskeys are chosen from dozens of sourced distillates and aged separately before blending. The light corn whiskey forms the sweet base, the rye adds spice, and the oloroso sherry from the Williams & Humbert bodega in Jerez brings dried fruit and nutty notes.

Best served
Neat, on the rocks, or in a Horsefeather

Why it's craft

This bottle blends three whiskeys that J. Rieger & Co. selected and aged but did not distill, and adds a small measure of 15-year-old oloroso sherry from Jerez, an old practice the company says it revived. The blending, proofing and bottling happen at the company's Kansas City distillery, revived in 2014 by Andy Rieger, a descendant of the 1887 founder, and bartender Ryan Maybee. It is bottled without chill filtration.
