“A high-rye, malt-heavy sweet mash bourbon distilled and aged in Kansas City.”

Tasting notes

nose
Candied orange peel and fresh-baked bread lead, with sweet corn, a peppermint candy note and a faint wisp of smoke
palate
Orange marmalade and demerara sugar over a base of oak, sparked by cracked black pepper and lightly toasted coconut
finish
Long, opening with a brief peppery bite that settles into toffee and mild pipe tobacco, the sweetness slowly thinning out as it fades

Mash bill

  • Corn56%
  • Rye30%
  • Malted barley14%

56% corn, 30% rye, 14% malted barley. The high rye share brings pepper and spice to the corn's sweetness, and the large malt portion is unusual for a bourbon. Each batch is a sweet mash started with fresh yeast instead of backset from an earlier run, which the master distiller favors for more control over aroma.

Cask
53-gallon American oak

Why it's craft

This bourbon is mashed, fermented, distilled on pot and column stills and aged in Kansas City by J. Rieger & Co., from a fresh-yeast sweet mash of 30% rye and 14% malt printed on the label. The company, an 1887 family name revived in 2014 by Andy Rieger and Ryan Maybee, became the first distillery in Kansas City since Prohibition, and its own whiskey has been on the market only since 2021. It is bottled without chill filtration.
