“A 96% rye from the house that made the first Kansas City whiskey since Prohibition.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Cherry blossom and caramelized orange over eucalyptus, sandalwood and baking spice, with an earthy undertone of hay and dry leaves
- palate
- Creamy and rich, moving from cherry cola and chocolate-covered cherry to spearmint, cocoa nib, candied ginger and a savory edge of salted seeds
- finish
- Long and spicy, opening on powdered ginger and clove, then easing into leather, sage, butterscotch and a faint thread of toasted coconut as the heat recedes
Mash bill
- Rye96%
- Malted barley4%
96% rye, 4% malted barley. The near-total rye recipe drives the spice, mint and herbal character, with just enough malt for conversion. It is made as a sweet mash, with each batch started from fresh yeast rather than a portion of the last.

Why it's craft
Rye was the first whiskey the revived J. Rieger & Co. distilled itself: its 2021 bottled-in-bond rye was the first whiskey distilled in Kansas City since Prohibition. This straight rye is a 96% rye sweet mash, fermented with fresh yeast, run through pot and column stills and aged in the company's own rickhouse. Andy Rieger, a descendant of the 1887 founder, and Ryan Maybee revived the business in 2014, and the rye is bottled without chill filtration.
