“An all-rye recipe given a full decade in oak, still bright with spearmint and raspberry over clove and black tea.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- bright spearmint and ripe raspberry over lemon zest, with clove spice woven through
- palate
- juicy and lively; white pepper and a grassy, mineral streak, cooled by fresh mint leaf
- finish
- long; blueberry and black tea linger with baking spice, fading on a note of cardamom
Mash bill
- Rye95%
- Malted rye5%
95% rye, 5% malted rye. With no corn or barley in the recipe, the malted rye supplies the enzymes for conversion, so the whiskey is rye from end to end. That near-total rye recipe drives the mint, clove and pepper notes, which a decade in oak deepens rather than buries. It is fermented sour mash style in open tanks.

Why it's craft
This ten-year straight rye is bottled at barrel strength from a recipe with no corn at all: rye plus malted rye. New Riff, founded in 2014, blended it from its own barrels of a different distillation season than its first decade-old rye and left it unfiltered, so the mint and spice oils stay in the glass. The spirit comes off a copper column and doubler after open, sour mash fermentation using water from a private well in the limestone aquifer below the distillery.
