“A corn-free rye from Virginia farm grain that leads with anise, pepper and toffee.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Dry rye cereal and cracked black pepper over charred oak, with hints of plum, honey and dried fruit
- palate
- Anise and licorice up front with pepper running throughout, then butter toffee, maple, tobacco, raisin and dried cherry over a subtle sweetness
- finish
- Long and warming, with peppery spice and brown-sugar sweetness that hang on before a light salinity dries it out at the close
Mash bill
- Rye83%
- Malted barley17%
83% rye, 17% malted barley. There is no corn in the mash, and the grain comes from land the distillery owns or leases in Virginia and is milled fresh each day. The heavy rye share drives the whiskey's dry cereal and black-pepper character, while the barley supplies the enzymes for conversion and a little malty sweetness.
- Cask
- New charred oak, #3 char
- Best served
- In a Sazerac or whiskey sour
Why it's craft
This rye has no corn at all in the mash, uses grain the distillery grows on owned or leased Virginia land, and is bottled in bond. Ragged Branch is privately owned by the founders who started it in 2014 and handles every step from milling to bottling on its own farm.
