“The house bourbon recipe with wheat in place of rye, bottled in bond for a softer, caramel-led pour.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Vanilla and caramel lead, lifted by cinnamon with softer clove and nutmeg behind
- palate
- Soft and rounded, with vanilla, sweet caramel and a touch of butterscotch set against baking spice and toasted oak
- finish
- Medium in length, with caramel sweetness lingering over mild oak and a trace of cinnamon that dries slowly as it fades
Mash bill
- Corn68%
- Wheat16%
- Malted barley16%
68% corn, 16% wheat, 16% malted barley. It follows the house bourbon recipe with wheat in place of rye, using grain grown on land the distillery owns or leases in Virginia and milled fresh each day. The wheat gives the bourbon a creamier texture and a softer, sweeter profile than the rye-recipe Signature.
- Cask
- New charred American oak, #3 and #4 char
- Best served
- Neat, or in a Bourbon Smash or Old Fashioned
Why it's craft
This bottling swaps rye for wheat in the house recipe and carries the bottled-in-bond designation, so it comes from one distilling season and at least four years under federal supervision. Ragged Branch is privately owned by the founders who started it in 2014; it grows its grain on owned or leased Virginia land, mills it daily and distills in a copper pot-column still on its Augusta County farm.
