“A rye-heavy marriage of mature bourbon and rye behind a commissioned oil portrait of the first woman Vice President.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- butterscotch and brown sugar with candied orange peel, cinnamon, allspice and pink peppercorn, over cedar shavings, apple fritter and a wisp of smoke
- palate
- vanilla and caramel cream open onto dried plum, candied fruit and cereal grain, with dark chocolate turning toward scorched sugar and a bitter oak edge
- finish
- medium-long; black pepper and rye grain lead, with butter, cream and grapefruit peel lingering before drying to oak tannin
Mash bill
- Rye58%
- Corn37%
- Malted barley5%
58% rye, 37% corn, 5% malted barley. That is the combined recipe of the straight bourbon and straight rye in the blend, and it leans to rye, so pink peppercorn and baking spice lead over the corn's caramel and vanilla.

Why it's craft
Madam is a sourced blend: a mature straight bourbon and a straight rye, combined at Republic Restoratives' Ivy City distillery into a recipe that is more rye than corn. The label is an oil portrait by DC artist Lex Marie, made for the January 2021 vice-presidential inauguration. The company is women-owned and crowdfunded, and it publishes the combined grain recipe for the blend.
