“A single-barrel rye split between DC and Kentucky warehouses, so each bottle carries the mark of where its barrel rested.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- clove, cinnamon stick and nutmeg over brown sugar and marshmallow, with orange peel, a herbal hint of dill and faint smoky cocoa
- palate
- cracked black pepper and nutmeg, then dark cherry, caramel and candied citrus peel over toasted oak and a resinous edge, settling into cocoa powder and steeped oolong
- finish
- long; cinnamon-candy heat and dry rye spice hold on, fading into dark chocolate and drying to bitter red tea and oak tannin
Mash bill
- Rye95%
- Malted barley5%
95% rye, 5% malted barley. It is a near-all-rye recipe, with only enough malted barley to supply the enzymes that turn the rye's starch into sugar. A rye share this high drives the whiskey's pepper, clove and resinous herbal character.
- Cask
- New charred American oak
- Best served
- neat, or in a Manhattan or Old Pal
Why it's craft
Purpose Rye is a 100-barrel run bottled one barrel at a time, with part of it aged in Washington, DC, and part in Kentucky, so two bottles can show how warehouse and climate change the same whiskey. Republic Restoratives, a women-owned and crowdfunded house founded in 2015, did not distill this rye itself and does not name its distiller. It selects, bottles and labels each barrel in DC.
