“One hand-picked barrel at full cask strength, so each bottle carries its own strength and flavor.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Shifts by barrel; expect caramel, marzipan and dried cherry with roasted corn, baking spice, graham cracker and a peppery oak edge
- palate
- Dense and oily with a hot rush up front; caramel chews, nougat and honey give way to baking chocolate, orange zest, black pepper and leather, turning drier and oakier as it opens
- finish
- Long; toffee, dark caramel and dried cherry hold first, then cinnamon tapers off into cigar box, coffee grounds and a dry, oily oak that lingers

Why it's craft
Each bottle comes from a single barrel chosen by Victoria Eady Butler, a fifth-generation descendant of Nearest Green, and goes in at the strength it left the cask, with the barrel number on the label. Before bottling, the whiskey goes through the Shelbyville distillery's triple filtration, including sugar maple charcoal, the Tennessee step that a standard single barrel bourbon skips. Uncle Nearest was founded in 2017 to honor Nearest Green, the first known African American master distiller.
