“Single malt finished in sherry casks seasoned with orange peel.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Orange peel and rich sherry over lightly toasted oak, with dried apricot and fig, quince paste, lemon zest, chocolate, mint and cinnamon
- palate
- Weighty and syrupy; orange cake, fresh orange juice and zest, chocolate and cinnamon, then black pepper, ginger, clove and tangy oak
- finish
- Very long and oily; cinnamon leads, the syrupy fruit holds, and oak spice and a hint of mint carry it out
Mash bill
- Malted barley100%
100% malted barley. Amrut has not published which of its barleys goes into Naarangi; its unpeated single malt is made from Indian six-row barley grown in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The orange comes from the casks, not the grain.
- Cask
- Ex-oloroso sherry casks seasoned with orange peel
- Finish
- About three years in oloroso casks seasoned with sherry, wine and orange peel
Why it's craft
Naarangi is Hindi for orange, and Amrut built that flavor into the wood: it seasoned oloroso sherry casks with sherry, wine and orange peel for about three years before filling them with its single malt. Amrut makes and ages the malt at its own distillery outside Bengaluru. The company was founded in 1948 and is still run by the Jagdale family.
