“Kentucky bourbon finished in fine-grain French oak seasoned for more than three years, dense with spiced cherry and chocolate.”

Tasting notes

nose
Burnt sugar and cherry woven into oak, with chocolate, roasted nuts, dried fruit, toasted marshmallow and a floral lift of orange peel
palate
Creamy and dense; spiced stewed cherries and chocolate arrive in waves with cinnamon, clove and allspice, then pipe tobacco and leather under toasted oak
finish
Long; dried cherry, apricot and citrus rind hold with soft spice and chocolate, and the oak stays firm without turning bitter

Mash bill

Full grain split not published.

At least 51% corn, the legal floor for bourbon; Michter's has not published the other grains or their proportions. PFG is built around wood rather than grain: the variable Michter's set out to control is the French oak of the finishing barrel, not the recipe.

Cask
New toasted and charred American oak, then new toasted and charred fine-grain French oak
Finish
Second barrel of fine-grain French oak (Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, Vosges)

Why it's craft

Bomberger's PFG is Michter's study in French oak: a Kentucky straight bourbon finished in new barrels coopered from fine-grain wood out of the Tronçais, Allier, Nevers and Vosges forests. The staves season outdoors near France's Charente River for at least 40 months before being hand-picked, and each barrel is toasted to a tightly defined temperature and time before it is charred. The name honors Bomberger's, the 19th-century name of the Pennsylvania distillery that John Shenk founded in 1753 and that later became Michter's. Michter's does not say where the bourbon in this bottle was distilled.
