“Four organic grains in equal shares, so corn sweetness, rye pepper, wheat softness and barley bread all get a say.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Blackberry and pear over honey, fresh bread, warm baking spice and a thread of sweet corn
- palate
- Velvety; dark fruit, cinnamon and toast, then sweet corn and earthy grain with a light dusting of pepper
- finish
- Medium; grain and spice carry on, white pepper builds in waves, and a faintly bitter, hop-like note is the last thing left
Mash bill
- Organic rye25%
- Organic corn25%
- Organic wheat25%
- Organic barley25%
25% organic rye, 25% organic corn, 25% organic wheat, 25% organic barley. Journeyman mashes the four grains in equal parts, so no single grain leads and each one shows in the glass, from the sweetness of corn and wheat to the spice of rye. Because no grain makes up a majority, the whiskey fits no bourbon, rye or wheat class and is labeled simply as whiskey.

Why it's craft
Silver Cross is built on four grains in exactly equal parts, a recipe that gives up any bourbon or rye class to let each grain show. Journeyman mills, mashes, ferments and distills every grain itself in the Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, a former corset and buggy-whip works, and has been certified organic and kosher since it started. One percent of sales goes to youth golf programs, which is where the name, an early British Open medal, comes from.
