“Pre-Prohibition Maryland-style rye — Abruzzi rye + floor malt + ale yeast fruitiness”
Tasting notes
- nose
- orange marmalade, honey, black tea, red fruit, and toasted malt from Abruzzi rye and floor malt
- palate
- rich and oily — honey, nutmeg, cocoa, yellow apple, and a touch of galangal — soft and buttery rather than aggressive rye pepper
- finish
- honeyed fruit and soft spice
Mash bill
- Abruzzi rye65%
- Leopold Bros floor-malted Colorado barley20%
- Corn15%
65% Abruzzi rye (heirloom, low-starch, oily and floral — grown ~25 miles north of the Denver distillery), 20% Leopold Bros floor-malted Colorado barley, and 15% corn. The corn-in-rye mash is the Maryland pre-Prohibition signature: fruitier and softer than peppery modern rye. Specialty ale yeast chosen to pull fruit rather than classic rye spice.
