“Twenty-year bourbon from the handful of barrels that held up past Michter's seventeen-year fork in the road.”

Tasting notes

nose
Orange and apricot open onto vanilla, butterscotch, clove and hazelnut, with graham cracker, tobacco and a touch of black pepper
palate
Creamy and coating; pecan pie, butterscotch and buttered toast, balanced by dark chocolate, dried fruit and warm barrel spice
finish
Long; leather and pipe smoke settle in first, then a honeyed sweetness carries to the end

Mash bill

Full grain split not published.

At least 51% corn, the legal floor for bourbon; Michter's has not published the rest of the recipe or which distillery made it. At twenty years old, this bourbon was distilled before Michter's began distilling in Louisville in August 2015, when the company bottled whiskey made by other distilleries or made to its own recipes under contract.

Cask
New fire-charred American white oak

Why it's craft

Michter's treats 17 to 20 years as the point where a small number of barrels become exceptional and the rest turn too woody, and Master Distiller Dan McKee personally picks the barrels for this release. Twenty years in the wood means this bourbon predates Michter's own stills: the company began distilling in Louisville in August 2015, and before that bottled whiskey from other distilleries or had it made to its recipes. Each release is a small numbered run, carried through two decades of evaporation in new charred oak.
