Mash bill
Full grain split not published.
80% dark pumpernickel rye, with non-GMO yellow corn, Ohio soft red winter wheat and two-row barley making up the rest; the split of those three is not published. Dark pumpernickel is a rare rye variety that Middle West says gives a softer spice than the rye most rye whiskeys use. The corn, wheat and barley round it out into a four-grain rye.

Why it's craft
Middle West built its rye around dark pumpernickel, a rare rye variety, and this bottling leaves that whiskey at full barrel strength. The grain is mashed, fermented and distilled at the company's Columbus distillery, founded in 2008. The barrels are toasted before they are charred, which shapes the caramel and smoke in the glass.
