Mash bill
Full grain split not published.
Non-GMO open-pollinated yellow corn, Ohio soft red winter wheat, dark pumpernickel rye and two-row barley; the proportions for this bottling are not published. Rye and wheat are rarely used together in bourbon because the two are hard to balance. Middle West says its dark pumpernickel rye brings a softer spice that sits alongside the wheat's baking-spice character without covering the caramel from the corn.

Why it's craft
This is Middle West's Michelone Reserve bourbon at barrel strength, from a four-grain recipe that puts wheat and dark pumpernickel rye in the same mash. The distillery, founded in Columbus in 2008, distills, ages and bottles its whiskey there, using Ohio soft red winter wheat. Its barrels come from a cooperage in Jackson, Ohio, and are toasted as well as charred.
