Tasting notes
- nose
- honey and oatcake over salted caramel, with clove, coffee bean, bark, fruit pastry dough, nougat and buttercream, and a hit of charred oak
- palate
- praline and cake batter, almond, maple and a touch of orange, with peppermint, vanilla and baking spice building toward pepper
- finish
- medium to long; cookie dough, clove and black pepper, with spiced nuts, dried cherry and wheat bread fading into oak
Mash bill
Full grain split not published.
Ohio soft red winter wheat; Middle West does not publish the full proportions. The distillery chose this Ohio-grown wheat to emphasize regional agriculture. Wheat leads the recipe in place of corn or rye, which is what makes it a wheat whiskey rather than a wheated bourbon.
- Cask
- New charred and toasted American white oak, Ohio-made
- Best served
- neat or with a splash of water
Why it's craft
Middle West keeps this whiskey close to home: the wheat is Ohio soft red winter wheat, the barrels come from a cooperage in Jackson, Ohio, and the whiskey is made in small batches at the distillery in Columbus. Founded in 2008, Middle West is independently owned and in May 2025 bought Old Elk Distillery, extending its reach beyond Ohio.
