“A bonded single malt made only from barley the Olander family grows and malts on its own farm.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- Banana cream pastry and fruit cobbler with honeyed granola, hazelnut, honeydew melon and black cherry, plus a light floral lift
- palate
- The pastry sweetness carries over into caramel and honey, then toasted oak, warm ginger, cardamom, allspice and a cool hint of mint fill in
- finish
- Medium-long; caramelized banana, rich pastry and baking spice stay put under a dusting of cocoa, drying toward leather and forest floor
Mash bill
- Malted barley100%
100% malted barley. The barley is grown on Olander Farms, the family's fifth-generation farm near Loveland, and malted on the farm by Root Shoot Malting in German-built Kaspar-Schulz equipment. Because the same family grows and malts every kernel, the grain character comes straight from their own fields and kilning choices.
- Cask
- First-use medium-char American white oak

Why it's craft
Root Shoot is the whiskey label of Olander Farms, a fifth-generation family farm in Loveland, where Todd Olander and his father Steve started Root Shoot Malting in 2016. The family sows, grows and malts the barley themselves, then has the whiskey distilled under contract at Vapor Distillery in Boulder to their recipe rather than at their own still. This flagship launched in August 2023 as a four-year bottled-in-bond single malt.
