“The Russells' own ten-year bourbon, picked barrel by barrel by father and son”
Tasting notes
- nose
- orange peel and butterscotch with maple, caramel, vanilla, baking spice, a touch of licorice and tobacco leaf
- palate
- spice first, then spicy caramel, butterscotch and vanilla with a little chocolate and red fruit leather over moderate oak
- finish
- medium; toffee and caramel stay alongside cinnamon, fennel and anise, then oak and a faint varnish note as the warmth fades
Mash bill
- Corn75%
- Rye13%
- Malted barley12%
75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley. Russell's Reserve is made from Wild Turkey's bourbon recipe, a high-rye mash whose rye brings the baking spice and anise that run under the caramel. A decade in deep-char barrels turns the corn's sweetness toward butterscotch and toffee.
- Cask
- New charred oak, No. 4 "alligator" char

Why it's craft
Russell's Reserve is the line Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie created together, and this 10 year old was its first bottling, brought to market in 2001. The Russells pick the barrels themselves after at least ten years of aging, a stated age carried on the front label. It is distilled and aged at Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, owned by Campari Group, in barrels with the No. 4 "alligator" char.
