Tasting notes
- nose
- apricot, toasted biscuit, milk chocolate and cherry pie
- palate
- lemon bars, vanilla and fudge, with a faint wisp of smoke
- finish
- short; waxy vanilla and fresh-cut oak, with a late flash of caramelized brown sugar
Mash bill
A blend of several whiskeys, so no single grain split.
A blend of Westland's American single malt with grain and light whiskey from MGP in Indiana; the proportions are not published. The malt side is Westland's Flagship recipe, a five-malt bill of Washington Select pale malt with Munich, Extra Special, pale chocolate and brown malts, aged in new oak and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The grain and light whiskey, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, lightens the body of the malt.
- Cask
- New American oak and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks (malt); ex-bourbon barrels (grain and light whiskey)
- Best served
- neat, over ice, or with a mixer
Why it's craft
Watchpost is Westland's first blended whiskey, and it names both halves: the distillery's own eight-year-old single malt and grain and light whiskey distilled by MGP in Indiana. A dollar from every bottle goes to the Washington Trails Association. Westland was founded in Seattle in 2010 and has been owned by Rémy Cointreau since 2017.
