Tasting notes
- nose
- honeysuckle, dried cherry, mocha, rum-soaked raisin and toasted almond
- palate
- peach streusel, raisin, coconut flake and apple pie
- finish
- long; fig jam, vanilla bean and stewed orchard fruit hold against tobacco and cigar box, with cinnamon-roll sweetness at the tail
Mash bill
- Pacific Northwest two-row malted barley100%
100% Pacific Northwest two-row malted barley. Westward brews it like an American ale, with ale yeast and a slow, low-temperature fermentation, so the wash going into the still already carries the fruit and bread notes of a beer.
- Cask
- New American oak, heavily toasted and lightly charred
- Best served
- in a Northwest Buck
Why it's craft
Westward brews its own wash from Pacific Northwest barley with ale yeast in Portland, double distills it on pot stills and ages it in new, heavily toasted oak: a brewer's route to single malt. This bottling goes from barrel to bottle with no water added and no filtering. The distillery, founded in Portland in 2004, was sold out of bankruptcy in 2025 to a group of private investors led by longtime board member Luis Fernando Leal and remains independent.
