“An accidental Vienna malt delivery, brewed and distilled the Westward way.”
Tasting notes
- nose
- maple candy, banana bread, orchard fruit and light florals
- palate
- deep honey, coconut macaroon and banana pudding
- finish
- butter cookie, toasted nuts and sponge cake, with mint and oak lingering
Mash bill
- Vienna malted barley100%
100% Vienna malted barley. A supplier delivered Vienna malt in place of Westward's standard two-row pale malt, and the distillery brewed and distilled it anyway, with the same ale-yeast fermentation and double pot distillation as its Original.
- Cask
- New American oak, heavily toasted and lightly charred
Why it's craft
This whiskey exists because of a delivery mistake: Westward's malt supplier sent Vienna malt in place of the usual pale malt, and the distillery chose to brew and distill it instead of sending it back. It went through the same process as the house Original, from a slow ale fermentation in Portland to double pot distillation and new American oak, so the grain is the one thing that changed.
