Why it's craft
Wigle revives Monongahela rye, the spicy, earthy rye that was the benchmark of American whiskey when Western Pennsylvania led the country's distilling in the 1700s and 1800s. Here it ages in small barrels first, then takes a year and a half in port barrels. Every grain is milled, fermented and pot-distilled in Pittsburgh's Strip District, where Wigle opened in 2012 as the city's first distillery since Prohibition. Pittsburgh Spirits, a family-owned company, bought the distillery in 2022.
