Tasting notes
- nose
- vanilla and charred oak
- palate
- caramel and vanilla with a mouth-coating texture, meeting oak, cinnamon and blood orange
- finish
- long and sweet; toffee, dark fruit and honey, turning woodier with oak spice and hot cinnamon
Mash bill
- Corn64%
- Wheat24%
- Malted barley12%
64% corn, 24% wheat, 12% malted barley. It keeps the same corn and malt shares as Wilderness Trail's high-rye bourbon, with wheat taking the rye's place, which softens the spice and leaves more room for caramel and fruit. The mash is a sweet mash, cooked with the distillery's own infusion method and fermented with its proprietary yeast strains instead of the soured backset most Kentucky bourbon uses.
- Cask
- New charred oak, #4 char
- Best served
- neat or on the rocks with a few drops of water

Why it's craft
Wilderness Trail grew out of Ferm Solutions, the fermentation-science company Shane Baker and Pat Heist started in 2006, and the pair built the distillery in Danville in 2012. When its whiskey first went on sale in 2018, it was the first bottled-in-bond, wheated, sweet-mash bourbon made in Kentucky since Prohibition. Campari Group bought a 70% stake in 2022, and the founders still run the distillery.
