Chad Munger founded Mammoth Distilling in 2013 in Central Lake, in Northern Michigan, with an early aim of creating jobs and helping small rural economies grow. Production sits on a campus on the shore of Torch Lake, where in 2018 the company brought its 650-liter Carl pot still, mash tun, fermenters, bottling line and rick house together. Its house whiskeys, Woolly Bourbon and Woolly Rye, are made from grain grown with Northern Michigan farms and aged in new charred oak, while the Northern Rye series and Northern Bourbon blend older whiskeys Mammoth bought with its own spirit. Since 2020 the company has been bringing back Rosen rye, a Prohibition-era variety, on South Manitou Island under a National Park Service permit. Mammoth runs tasting rooms across Michigan and is still owned by Munger, who in 2024 also announced a separate contract-distilling venture, Consolidated Rye & Whiskey, with his wife Tracy Hickman.
