Ryan and Jenny Montgomery began planning a small distillery in Missoula after their son Heath was born in 2009, and in 2010 they traveled to Scotland, where Ryan studied under Frank McHardy at Springbank Distillery. They opened in 2012 at 129 West Front Street as Missoula's first craft distillery, distilling on a 450-liter combination pot-column still built by Christian Carl of Germany, with a 21-plate column for clear spirits that runs as a pot still for whiskey. Ryan's parents, Tom and Chris Montgomery, grow the distillery's wheat and rye on the family farm near Heath, Montana, at the center of the state along Big Spring Creek. The distillery mills, ferments and distills its own grain, and its range includes Sudden Wisdom straight rye, an American single malt first laid down in 2013, Mama Tried wheated and high-rye bourbons, Skadi aquavit, Whyte Laydie gin and Quick Silver vodka. In October 2025 it released B'Amaro, a bourbon-based amaro built on Mama Tried wheated bourbon. The business remains family-owned, with Ryan Montgomery as owner.
