Old Dominick takes its name from Domenico Canale, an Italian immigrant whose Memphis firm D. Canale & Co., formally established in 1866, sold Old Dominick whiskey. His great-great-grandsons Chris and Alex Canale revived the brand in 2013 and opened a distillery at 305 South Front Street in downtown Memphis, which made its first batch of Tennessee whiskey in 2017. Grain is milled, distilled and bottled on site on a copper column still that runs two floors of the building, and the Tennessee whiskey is charcoal mellowed before it goes into new charred oak barrels. In 2022 it released its Straight Tennessee Whiskey, which it called the first whiskey distilled, barreled, matured and bottled in Memphis since Prohibition. Its range also includes the Huling Station line, launched in 2020 with whiskey sourced from MGP. The Canale family still owns the distillery, and after founding master distiller Alex Castle left in 2024, David Valentine took over as head distiller.
