Lee Kennedy, a seventh-generation Williamson County resident, founded Leiper's Fork Distillery with his family in 2016 just outside the village of Leiper's Fork, near Franklin, Tennessee. Kennedy had distilled at home for more than two decades, and after Tennessee changed its distilling law in 2009 he spent three years working to amend Williamson County law so a distillery could open there. The distillery mashes, ferments, distills, ages and bottles all of its whiskey on a 27-acre property, using local non-GMO grain and a 500-gallon Scottish-style swan-neck copper pot still, and makes about 25,000 gallons a year. Its flagship whiskeys are a Tennessee whiskey, a wheated bourbon and a rye, each bottled in bond at 100 proof. The family still owns the distillery, which also runs the House of Spirits on Main Street in Franklin and lists a third site at Nashville Yards as coming soon.
