Volunteer firefighter Jess Graber and physicist and rancher George Stranahan met fighting a barn fire and started talking about whiskey. In 2004 they opened Colorado's first legal distillery since Prohibition. They made whiskey from 100% malted barley aged in new American oak rather than following Kentucky bourbon practice. The whiskey is cut with Eldorado spring water and bottled without chill filtration. Proximo Spirits later bought the brand and expanded production, which still happens at the Denver distillery on Kalamath Street. Stranahan's Original is its main single malt.

Owned by Proximo Spirits (Becle).
