Under Armour founder Kevin Plank and former Under Armour executive Bill McDermond started Sagamore Spirit in 2013 to revive Maryland-style rye, a style that largely disappeared after Prohibition, and named it after Plank's Sagamore Farm in Reisterstown. Its first ryes combined a high-rye and a low-rye whiskey distilled by MGP in Indiana, which were proofed and bottled in Maryland with limestone spring water trucked from the farm. The waterfront distillery in Baltimore's Port Covington neighborhood, now called Baltimore Peninsula, began distilling in April 2017 with a 40-foot copper column still, two copper doublers and a 250-gallon pot still for experimental releases. The rye is distilled three times and aged in new charred American oak in barns that are not climate controlled, and the low-rye recipe uses non-GMO corn from Sagamore Farm. Its Port Finish rye was named World's Best Rye Whiskey at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and in 2024 it launched Small Batch Rye as its first fully Maryland-made whiskey sold worldwide. In September 2023 Illva Saronno, the Italian maker of Disaronno, bought a majority stake, and that parent renamed itself Disaronno Group in 2026.
